Air Serbia has announced that, after more than 30 years since its predecessor, Jat Airways, last flew from Belgrade, Serbia, to Toronto, Canada, the airline is returning to the Canadian city in May 2026.

On October 13, 2025, the Serbian carrier said that starting May 23, 2026, it would offer twice-weekly departures between Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) with an Airbus A330-200. Tickets go on sale on October 16.

Jiří Marek, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Air Serbia, said that flights to YYZ will complement its current North American network, which includes flights to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

“JAT operated its last flight to Toronto in May 1992. Now, after more than 30 years, we are proud to announce the reintroduction of a direct service between Belgrade and Toronto.”

According to Marek, the Serbian diaspora in Toronto has been asking for a direct connection for years, and Air Serbia has finally been able to align its strategic plans with the market’s demands. “Establishing a strong presence in the North American market is accomplishing our vision for Belgrade to become a transit hub, linking Europe and North America,” Marek said.

Air Serbia pointed out that from Belgrade, passengers would be able to reach 19 destinations in Europe, including cities in the Balkans. Meanwhile, Statistics Canada, the official statistics portal of Canada, indicated that in 2021, when Canada held its last census, there were 12,215 Serbian-born immigrants living in the Toronto metropolitan area. 29,595 people consider themselves of Serbian origin.

Overall, Canada was home to 33,280 Serbian-born immigrants, with a total of 93,355 saying that their ethnicity is Serbian, in 2021.

Cirium’s Diio Mi showed that currently, Air Serbia has scheduled long-haul flights from BEG to four destinations: Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), JFK, ORD, and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). The airline should add YYZ soon.

With flights between BEG and YYZ being scheduled to depart on Wednesdays and Saturdays, this will mean that Air Serbia’s long-haul network will have two departures on the former and four departures on the latter.

On Sundays, it has not scheduled any long-haul flights, while on Thursdays, its only long-haul departure is from BEG to JFK.

According to planespotters.net, Air Serbia has four A330-200s in its fleet, all of which were acquired on the second-hand market. YU-ARB is an ex-Aeroflot airframe, while YU-ARD and YU-ARE were originally delivered to Etihad Airways. South African Airways was the first operator of YU-ARC, with the South African airline retiring the aircraft in March 2020.

The Serbian airline welcomed its A330-200s between April 2021 and February 2025, with the latest addition being YU-RE, which, after spending time with Etihad Airways, was briefly flown by Air Belgium.
